Our inner worlds are our next frontier.
It’s in our inner world where leaders can gain an edge. But it’s a small percentage of leaders who develop that edge.
Can you be successful without it?
Depends on your definition of success.
Look at someone like Steve Jobs. He was incredibly innovative. He redesigned his industry.
But he often didn’t treat people well. He was a jerk to a lot of people.
Biographer Walter Isaacson wrote that Jobs’ “mammoth personality could inspire those around him just as easily as it could tear them down.”
So sure, he has a legacy of success.
One that’s been romanticized.
But he left behind harm. He’s gone and there still are people getting over the trauma he left behind.
Lots of leaders think that kind of meanness is part of the job.
That it’s ok if you’re getting ‘results.’
But there’s a host of others who want a different legacy.
For them, business success isn’t enough.
The how it’s done matters just as much.
They want to lift people up rather than tearing them down.
They want to thrive and helps others thrive in the uncertainty and complexity of work and life.
To make a difference in the lives of others. And to mentor and support other leaders who also make a difference in the world.
