Why Great People Act Out (or Overreact)

There’s a lot of pent-up emotional energy right now. People went into survival mode when Covid hit. Now all those emotions put on hold during the crisis are coming up.

That’s why you’re seeing people act out. Unprocessed emotions are at the center of it.

Emotions don’t disappear when you push them away. They get stored. Think of it like reservoirs just below conscious awareness.

Angry? Afraid? Those kinds of scary and overwhelming emotions get pushed down and dumped into a reservoir.

Then when you get triggered – maybe someone does something that makes you mad – that anger resonates with what’s been bottled up and it all suddenly comes flooding back into consciousness.

So much emotion in the moment can take over and have you acting in ways that don’t align with your values and who you want to be.

One of the greatest things leaders can do for their people, especially right now, is to help them move from overwhelm to empowerment. Emotional empowerment is central to that.

That means big shifts in how we see and interact with our emotions. Learning to listen and feel them rather than ‘manage’ or analyze them. Starting to see them, not as negative and to be avoided, but as valid parts of ourselves with essential messages that guide us to better living.
